It was a natural choice for me to choose Murdoch University as it is recognised as one of the top universities in the world. I was drawn to the option of being able to broaden my career options by completing two majors in one degree, with my preferred choice in Journalism and Public Relations.
I like that the lecturers are highly qualified industry professionals who show a deep passion for what they are teaching, and I appreciate their caring disposition and teaching style as it helps students better understand complex topics and nuances.
In addition, thanks to Murdoch University’s unparalleled industry links, students who are enrolled in the Public Relations Major like myself will automatically receive student membership in the Murdoch University Singapore-IPRS Student Chapter, where we get to tap into the knowledge and experience of industry professionals. I have found this initiative very useful as I was able to discover more about my field of interest and acquire knowledge outside the traditional realm of the classroom through the student-centric activities spearheaded by the Student Chapter.
Murdoch University offers the opportunity to learn beyond your chosen specialisation via breadth units designed to introduce new knowledge and develop a rounded perspective that will help in preparing students for the multidisciplinary world. I was able to gain a range of interdisciplinary perspectives on various topics by working with students from other specialisations to explore problems and create solutions that are relevant and applicable in the real world.
Account Executive, Transportation Industry
Bachelor of Business in Accounting
Murdoch University Student (2019)
I graduated from Singapore Polytechnic with a Diploma in Accountancy. After working for a couple of years in an accounting consultancy firm, my brother who was a student in Kaplan encouraged me to further my studies and to attend the preview sessions to find out more.
I was overwhelmed by the number of universities and programmes offered by Kaplan. Finally, I chose Murdoch University to pursue my Bachelor’s Degree. I was impressed by the number of professional accreditations, and recognition the Accounting Bachelor’s Degrees have.
They are accredited by ACCA with exemptions for F1-F9 papers, an associate member of the Institute of Singapore Chartered Accountants (ISCA) and is also accredited by CPA Australia that allows direct entry to CPA programmes.
The modules are practical and industry-relevant. One of the modules, ‘Technology and Accounting Processes’ teaches us how to use an accounting software, QuickBooks. It facilitates our understanding of the computerised accounting process.
Accounting modules can be difficult to understand. However, the lecturers simplify the concepts to make it easier for us to comprehend.
Senior Loan Ambassador, OCBC Bank
Bachelor of Business in Banking and Finance (Double Major)
Murdoch University Student (2019)
After my O-Levels, I joined Kaplan to study for my Diploma in Commerce (Finance and Banking). After completing my Diploma, my passion for this industry grew further.
I am highly motivated to join the Banking and Finance industry because among the top three financial centres in the world, Singapore is the largest corporate banking centre in Asia with over 1,200 financial institutions providing a wide array of financial services, including banking, insurance, investment banking and treasury services.
The industry is highly competitive. Without a minimum Bachelor’s Degree qualification, it is challenging to get a job. I decided to embark on my Degree programme to have a better future and career prospect.
Although there are several options like Banking and Business Law, Banking and Management, Banking and Marketing, I have enrolled in Banking and Finance Double Major because it allows me to pursue my interests with more depth and learn the skill sets and knowledge. Moreover, the Double Major will give me a competitive advantage over the others.
The flexibility of the programme delivery and structure also appealed to me. I can plan my study schedule at my own pace. I can decide how many modules to complete in each trimester depending on my workload.
I am a Loan Ambassador at OCBC Bank. My job includes assisting clients with unsecured facilities and advising them on their financial needs. The Degree has helped me to better understand investment products, unit trust, and other securities. The knowledge and skill sets from modules like Investment Analysis, Commercial Banking, have allowed me to apply them in my job.
I believe the Degree will benefit me in pursuing a higher position like a Personal Banker which I aspire to be.
Would I recommend Murdoch University to others? Yes, definitely! I would like my friends to benefit from the Degree as well. Not only can it help in their career advancement, but it is a great investment in their future.
Group Compliance, Anti-money Laundering Team, United Overseas Bank
Bachelor of Business in Banking and Finance (Double Major)
Murdoch University Student (2017)
I had found the Banking and Finance programme to be helpful in enhancing my understanding of the highly globalised banking industry. When I decided to pursue a degree after encouragement from my friends and family, taking a Murdoch University Double Major programme at Kaplan was a clear choice for me.
Other than the ideal course duration due to the advanced standing received through my relevant diploma, a flexible schedule and industry’s recognition of the qualification gave me greater confidence in taking the plunge.
Having lecturers who made complicated concepts easy to grasp was a huge bonus. On top of this, I appreciate the lecturers’ good support of timely responses to my queries, even when it was outside lesson hours.
Marketing Communications Manager, CNP Cosmetics Singapore Pte Ltd
Bachelor of Communication in Communication and Media Studies and Public Relations (Double Major)
Murdoch University Graduate (2017)
I graduated with a Diploma in Molecular Biotechnology from Ngee Ann Polytechnic. However, I decided for a career switch when I had the chance to work in a fast-moving consumer goods firm. I was inspired by how a brand manager plays a vital role in the marketing and communications industry.
Knowing that I lacked the relevant skills in communications and public relations, I went ahead with a Double Major in Communication and Public Relations from Murdoch University with Kaplan. I felt it would put me on a better leverage in today’s competitive society and the Degree would equip me with the skills to be more effective in building and understanding business-to-consumer relations.
The flexible study schedule helped me to juggle work and studies. As most of the lecturers are working professionals from different walks of life, they shared beneficial industry insights during classes.
The Degree programme has helped me gain a deeper understanding of social media, and I have learnt to be a more strategic marketing and communications professional.
Community Executive, LEVEL3, Unilever
Bachelor of Communication in Communication and Media Studies and Public Relations (Double Major)
Murdoch University Graduate (2017)
After I graduated from Temasek Polytechnic, I was working as an intern reporter at a news publication, coupled with various stints as a writer for school publications, I knew then that this is the industry I want to work in.
I decided to pursue a Double Major Degree in Communication and Media Studies and Public Relations with Murdoch University at Kaplan. One of the key reasons in choosing this university was because I would complete the Degree in 18 months instead of 28 months given exemptions with my Polytechnic Diploma.
I love the practical aspects of the programme. It was structured in a flexible manner. For example, I could mix and match modules, and take on as many or as little as my time allowed. It helped that the location of the campus is central and easily accessible by public transport, as I could continue to work while studying for my Degree.
The assignments and group projects were also realistic and could be implemented in the industry. In fact, my project for the Campaign Management module, for which my group designed and presented a comprehensive social media campaign for the Singapore Red Cross, will be implemented by the organisation.
The programme was facilitated by experienced lecturers and trainers from relevant industries. For example, we learnt about public relations from a lecturer who had over 15 years of experience in the industry. The lecturers passed on their skills and experiences to us, and were generally willing to share relevant contacts when we requested from them.
This Degree has prepared me well for the demands of my job as my role requires me to create content for social media and interact with the workspace community to understand their needs better, among others.
Cyber Threat Analyst, OCBC Bank
Bachelor of Science in Cyber Forensics & Information Security and Business Information Systems (Double Major)
Murdoch University Student (2018)
As cybercrimes and unethical hacking are escalating and becoming more prevalent, there is an increasing demand for cyber security professionals not just in Singapore but globally. I decided to obtain a Degree in Cyber Security.
Moreover, due to my Diploma in Information Security from Nanyang Polytechnic, I was exempted from some modules. To broaden my knowledge and skill sets, I have decided a Double Major so as to gain competitive advantage and increase my career choices. And the reason I have chosen Murdoch University because the Degree is internationally recognised.
My job scope includes monitoring, analysing, investigating and escalation of real-time security risks that are threats to the organisation. It includes providing timely detection, identification, and containment of possible cyber-attacks or intrusions. And also to determine the effectiveness and impact assessment of an observed attack
No doubt, Murdoch University Bachelor’s Degree in Cyber Security and Forensics & Business Information Systems boost my skills and knowledge to perform my job effectively. And the programme is accredited by Australian Computer Society.
The challenge we now face is to shape a digital society that is resilient to cyber threats, I encourage people who are keen to combat these threats, to join the cyber security industry. There is plenty of opportunities for graduates because Singapore is facing a massive shortage of cyber security and information and communications technology professionals.
Teacher, Jan & Elly English Language School
Top 2% Vice Chancellor’s Commendation for Academic Excellence Awards 2017 Recipient
Bachelor of Commerce in Economics & Management (Double Major)
Murdoch University Graduate (2017)
I feel that getting a Degree is a vital stepping stone to getting through corporate doors. Whatever Degree you take on, it serves as an indicator of one’s ability and competency. With almost everyone holding a Degree now, I see it as an essential qualification to securing a job, as well as broadening one’s own knowledge base.
Beyond that, a Degree opens up a lifetime of opportunities. There will be more job openings, more chances at promotions and more flexibility with which jobs I can take or keep.
I have chosen Murdoch University because it is very well-established at Kaplan, having offered Murdoch Bachelor’s Degree programmes for many years now. Besides being very reputable, it has solid infrastructure in terms of lecturers, student relations officers and consultants.
I particularly appreciated Murdoch’s flexibility in learning and assessments. What appealed to me the most was the independence gained and the wide spectrum of knowledge we opened up ourselves to in the process of carrying out research for our assignments. What’s more, the process of learning also taught me to be very organised and responsible in balancing work and studies, as we had limited time to get things done.
Having this Double Major Degree under my belt allows me to pursue my dreams. It gives a sense of great pride to myself, my family and my friends.
Financial Advisor, AXA Insurance
Barista, Habitat Coffee
Bachelor of Commerce in Finance and Management (Double Major)
Murdoch University Graduate (2017)
After my O-Levels, I took a Diploma in Hospitality and Tourism Management. During my internship while studying at Temasek Polytechnic, I first came to contact with coffee when I was working at an artisan dessert café. My love for coffee grew.
Passion for coffee drove me to become a barista. After my National Service, I worked part-time at Habitat Coffee while studying for my Degree.
I learnt my barista skills from Habitat Coffee and started to take part in competitions. One of my most significant achievements was being Top 32 in Coffee Fest Latte World Championship Open Tokyo and Osaka 2017. The competition to Tokyo was sponsored by Kaplan Singapore.
It was very challenging to study and work at the same time. Murdoch University offers students the flexibility to plan their study schedules. I can choose the number of modules to study for each trimester according to my work schedule.
In preparation to have my café, I decided to pursue a Double Major Degree in Finance and Management. With an academic background in finance, I could interpret and make use of financial planning data to forecast how much funding required to start my business. I also acquire the knowledge of financial principles on how to manage my money and business revenues.
Choosing Management as the other major is a natural choice. Management equips me with the essential business skills and knowledge to set up my café. It preps me to handle tasks on the business side of the venture, such as creating a business plan, negotiating, and managing people. It provides me the skill sets to analyse data, improve financial decisions and provide excellent customer service.
While I am working towards owning my café, I am currently a Financial Advisor. Having a Degree in Finance gives me a head start to join AXA Insurance.
Talent Acquisition Executive, Luxury Careers Pte Ltd
Bachelor of Commerce in Hospitality & Tourism Management and Management (Double Major)
Murdoch University Student (2017)
After completing my Diploma in Hospitality & Tourism Management in Kaplan, I immediately continued to pursue a Degree in Hospitality & Tourism Management and Management with Murdoch University.
In my opinion, having a Bachelor’s Degree is very critical to staying relevant in Singapore. A Degree is an investment that will bring job security and it is a down payment on my future. I believe that by obtaining a Degree, I would be highly marketable and this will pave the way for multiple opportunities for myself.
To decide on which university was an easy decision! Murdoch University is recognised worldwide and it has a vast offering of over 180 Double Majors and 18 disciplines to choose from.
I decided to pursue a Double Major Degree programme because I can learn two specialisations and gain the competitive edge over my peers.
I chose Management as the other major because the modules are industry-relevant. They add value to my current job. I have a stronger understanding due to hands-on application of the theories learned in class. I am more confident to see a task through from beginning to end despite challenges and obstacles along the way. To me, it is an important skill in a real-world professional setting where things do not always go as planned.
I would encourage Diploma graduates to pursue their Degrees. It is a commitment but the benefits you reap after earning your Degree will make the investment well worth it. Murdoch University is the right choice for you!
Account Manager, Creative Agency
Bachelor of Arts in Web Communication and
Public Relations (Double Major)
Murdoch University Student (2018)
I am a Senior Account Executive with Saatchi & Saatchi Singapore. My key role is client servicing, essentially the middleman between the client and the agency. Managing the client’s needs and being involved in all the moving parts of the campaigns.
I connect my agency’s creative efforts with the advertisers’ needs, from leading the first meeting on a new account to researching media outlets for a campaign.
I have chosen Web Communication due to the strong growth in the digital media industry, and I aim to equip myself by obtaining an academic qualification in this specialisation.
The Web Communication Degree is an innovative qualification that provides me with essential practical, theoretical and technical knowledge in the core areas of social media strategy, search engine optimisation, digital content strategy and web analytics.
It will also help me in my job to formulate integrated campaigns for my clients.
I have also decided to major in public relations as I wanted to gain an in-depth understanding of public relations and how it could complement my work.
The modules covered by Web Communication Degree are practical and applicable. My two favourites are Web Metrics and Screen: Small, Medium and Large. They are fun, and there is a lot of hands-on learning.
I have decided to further my studies due to several reasons.
Firstly, I graduated from Ngee Ann Polytechnic with a Diploma in Advertising and Public Relations. With my Poly Diploma, I received 8 module exemptions and can complete my Degree in 16 months instead of 28 months.
Second, the job market is extremely competitive, having a diploma qualification will not suffice. I believe a University education will help me to succeed in today’s workforce and fast-track my career.
Third, I want to learn and gain more knowledge and expand my skill sets.
Lastly, I want to gain a sense of personal achievement.
After taking a detailed look at the modules offered, I decided to take up the Degree. Some of the modules I learnt in Polytechnic, are covered in the Degree programme with a lot more depth.
Another reason leading to my choice was due to the flexible study schedule offered by Murdoch University.
Hours are long and erratic working in an advertising agency. With this flexibility, I can plan my study schedule.
Having a flexible study schedule caters to my hectic work, and the timing of the lesson allows me to get to class on time.
The blended learning suits my hectic schedule. There were occasions when I could not make it for classes; I was able to retrieve the uploaded videos and watch them.
Another plus point, we watch pre-recorded lectures and complete pre-workshop activities before attending class.
Blended learning ensures that we have a productive session during the lesson. We can use the time to clarify anything we did not understand and delve deeper into challenging topics as opposed to a typical class where we only listen to the lecturer.
The blended learning not only allows the more effective use of my time, but it also gives me the flexibility to manage time better.
Senior Executive, Digital Printing Agency
Bachelor of Business in International Business and Management (Double Major)
Murdoch University Student (2019)
I decided to upgrade myself when I was transferred from Finance department to a Customer Service role. I enrolled with Murdoch University at Kaplan to do a Bachelor's Degree programme in International Business and Management. I feel it is imperative to develop new skill sets and knowledge to strengthen my portfolio and for future career advancement.
Initially, I was not sure whether to choose the single or double majors. After much consideration, I decided to go ahead with a Double Major in International Business and Management. The key reason is that an International Business qualification can open up career opportunities in a variety of sectors and countries around the world.
For example, the company I am currently working, it started its business in catering for local clients. However, in recent years, it has expanded into Malaysia and other parts of the Asia-Pacific region. I believe this programme can help me to develop a global mindset. The modules cover different aspects – from International Marketing, Management, Human Resources, Operations, and Economics to Business Negotiation.
As a Customer Service Executive, the knowledge I gained from studying Management equips me on how to effectively lead and manage people.
The modules such as Organisational Theory and Behaviour, Business Analytics and Decision Making, Organisation Development Change are practical and industry-relevant.
Another reason I chose Murdoch University was because it would allow me to work and study at the same time. Due to its flexibility, I have control over my schedule. It is a merit for working professionals like us, and its central location is another plus point.
Personally, I like the blended learning offered by Murdoch University. By providing online videos which guide me along and contain more information on the topic itself so I have a basic understanding even before the lesson starts. This makes studying easier.
I would recommend Murdoch University to others. It has a good reputation, knowledgeable and friendly lecturers, and a great environment for learning.
General Manager, FastJobs (Philippines)
Bachelor of Business in Management and International Business (Double Major)
Murdoch University Graduate (2020)
Kaplan offered me a fast track to a degree. I could finish it in 16 months instead of 28 months because I was exempted from some modules, thanks to my Diploma from Nanyang Polytechnic.
The programme offered me insights into the global economic and business climates – just what I needed to develop a global mindset. It equipped me with the necessary skills to evaluate and manage challenges and opportunities in an increasingly complex global economy, especially for new start-ups. There was a good mix of written assignments, projects and examinations. We also worked on case studies in teams, and that helped me pick up skills in teamwork and project management.
More importantly, I found what I needed to succeed in a start-up economy. My Degree has benefitted me tremendously in my career.
Educator, Early Childhood Industry
Bachelor of Arts in Psychology
Murdoch University Student (2017)
I graduated with a Diploma in Electronics, Computer and Communications from Nanyang Polytechnic. However, I wanted to pursue my passion so I took up a Diploma in Early Childhood Education programme. Now, I’m pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology.
As an educator, I work with children below 7 years old and their parents. I find that studying Psychology gives me a better understanding of human behaviour and makes it easier when communicating with children and parents. Most importantly, Psychology can be applied in any industry as it also focuses on understanding the human dynamics in the workplace.
I have enrolled in the Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Murdoch University because it has a good reputation internationally, and believe I can create a positive impact on others through applying the knowledge and skills from this programme.
The lecturers are very caring and they encourage us to ask questions. I find it very motivating. Another plus point is, the class size is small. Learning is enhanced and there are opportunities for everyone to participate.
Working full-time, studying part-time and managing my forum were a struggle initially because my job occasionally requires me to work on Saturdays and I had four modules to complete per trimester. Thanks to Murdoch University, it offers blending learning and flexible schedule both which help me to plan my own time.
This Degree allows me to keep my options open in the industry. I hope to be able to use my skills to connect fellow educators in Singapore.
Instructor, Singapore Armed Forces (SAF)
Bachelor of Business in International Business and Management (Double Major)
Murdoch University Student (2017)
After I graduated from Republic Polytechnic with a Diploma in Materials Science, I was enlisted in the army in 2011.
In 2015, I joined SAFTI Military Institute as an Instructor. My job is to educate officer cadets with military fundamentals and knowledge on aspects of their jobs. It was around the same time that I decided to further my studies.
By pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree, I hope to equip myself with the skill set to help the cadets in adjusting to the environment quickly and enhance my existing skills, so that I can perform better in my current role. It also opens up new opportunities in SAF or future endeavours.
I have chosen International Business and Management as my specialisations so that I can expose myself to new fields of study, gain knowledge and develop skill sets.
Most importantly, I want to challenge myself. It gives me a great sense of accomplishment, and the confidence to expand my network and move upwards in my career.
Kaplan offers many choices for Bachelor’s Degree programmes. I decided to go for Murdoch University due to its recognition in Australia. It is ranked in the World’s Top 100 Universities under 50 years old by Times Higher Education 2016.
The other plus point is Murdoch University offers more than 180 Double Majors. I have chosen a double major in International Business and Management.
I believe International Business will give me the know-how in creating business opportunities overseas; and with Management, I am able to learn the proper way of managing people and getting things done through people. In my line of work, it requires me to manage more people as I progress.
As I am a part-time student, I appreciate the blended learning introduced by Murdoch University. It is a hybrid teaching which combines e-learning with traditional classroom methods. I can catch up on what I have missed or to recollect my thoughts after the class.
The lecturers are experienced in their specialisations, fun and engaging.
I would recommend Murdoch University to others. Join the preview to find out more information.
Youth Officer, Government Agency
Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Management (Double Major)
Murdoch University Graduate (2017)
I graduated from Nanyang Polytechnic with a Diploma in Business Management. While my peers went overseas or to other institutions, I decided to search for something that would fit my needs.
My friend, who works in Kaplan, introduced me to Murdoch University. I decided to further my studies at Kaplan because its degree programme can be completed within my ideal duration and the Degree is accredited by the Australian Psychology Accreditation Council and recognised by the Australian Psychological Society.
I chose to take up a Double Major in Psychology and Management because I found the Degree programme would allow me to study people-related topics, so that I could learn how to impact youths’ lives and also, help me in my interaction with the youths.
Senior Product Specialist, Novartis (S) Pte Ltd
Bachelor of Business in Management and Marketing (Double Major)
Murdoch University Student (2017)
I have been working for more than a decade, 4 years in the nursing sector and 7 years in the pharmaceutical industry. I am currently a Senior Product Specialist working in a multinational pharmaceutical company, Novartis (S) Pte Ltd.
It was the right time for me to pursue a Degree. I graduated from Nanyang Polytechnic with a Diploma in Nursing. Having a Diploma qualification is not sufficient. The slowing economy has affected the job market. In order to stay competitive, I decided to further my studies for career advancement.
The Double Major in Management and Marketing hits the sweet spot. It is the perfect combination for me. The modules in the programme enhance my theoretical knowledge. They help me to understand why one technique works better over others and complements my practical knowledge. What I learnt from theory, I can apply to my actual day-to-day work.
I appreciate the curriculum of this Degree programme a lot. It aids in my understanding of the consumers’ perspectives. No matter how good the product or service is, the simple truth is that no one will buy it if the consumers don't want it or believe they don't need it. Knowing and understanding customer needs is at the centre of every successful business, whether it sells directly to individuals or other businesses.
I would recommend this Degree programme to people who are in marketing and sales roles. Working professionals would appreciate the flexibility in the study schedules offered by Murdoch University. It allows us to manage our work and studies.
Singapore National Footballer
Bachelor of Commerce in Human Resource Management and Management (Double Major)
Murdoch University Graduate (2017)
After I graduated from Republic Polytechnic with a Diploma in Sports and Leisure Management, I had a desire to go overseas to continue my studies, but I did not want to compromise my football career so I decided to stay in Singapore to continue my studies.
In preparation for my post-football career to open a football academy, I saw the importance of furthering my education. I took up a Bachelor’s Degree from Murdoch University.
The knowledge I have acquired from the two majors is highly useful. In the Human Resource Management major, we learnt about people management. This is relevant to many aspects including football, where it’s important for us to work well with people of diverse backgrounds.
As for the Management major, the knowledge and skill sets will be really handy when I am ready to start my football academy for the underprivileged after I retire from professional football.
Time management is critical to me. I need to juggle between the demands of daily training during football seasons and studies. I was worried about not being able to pass the exams because I did not have enough time for my studies due to football training conducted abroad.
I am grateful to my lecturers and classmates. They were understanding and supportive, even when I had to leave class early for competitions at times. Their dedicated guidance and help made it easier for me to catch up with lessons and assignments.
I am relieved to receive my Degree and I can now focus solely on the fields. I am training hard with our national team for the upcoming ASEAN Football Federation Suzuki Cup 2018.
At the same time, I will continue to focus on opportunities that will help me grow and develop in other fields or organisations.
Digital Media Officer, Corporate Communication &
Relations Division, Public Sector
Bachelor of Arts in Communication & Media Studies and Web Communication (Double Major)
Murdoch University Student (2018)
It was a wake-up call when I saw my colleague who was going to be in his fifties embark on further education. I asked myself what I was doing with my life.
At the same time, I was motivated by my colleague who is currently pursuing a Degree in Cyber Forensics & Information Security and Management with Murdoch University. He said it is never too late to study and upgrade oneself.
He shared with me the flexible study schedule offered by Murdoch University that had made it easy to juggle between work and studies. Besides, Murdoch University is a reputable university and ranks in the World’s Top 100 Universities by Times Higher Education.
I went on to find out more information from Kaplan and decided to go for a Double Major. The first major was Communication & Media Studies. Since I am working in a Corporate Communications department, I hope this Degree can prepare me for media-related work, and train me to analyse how media reflects, represents and influences the world.
With new digital technologies and services constantly being launched, the digital world is in a continuous state of expansion and evolution. I chose Web Communications as the other major as it will and it benefits me as a Digital Media Officer.
Initially, I was fearful that I would not be able to cope. However, the lecturers are very passionate in sharing their knowledge with the students. To me, it is the energy the lecturers have that ignited the spark in me to crave for more understanding.
With the integrated learning approach adopted by Murdoch University, I can access online tutorials and watch them to prepare before my lessons.
I am confident the Double Major Degree will give me the competitive edge and opportunities for me to excel in my career.
Communication Lecturer, Temasek Polytechnic
Bachelor of Arts in Communication and Media Studies and Public Relations (Double Major)
Murdoch University Graduate (2019)
Benjamin Choo is a lecturer, a professional emcee, and a winner of the Murdoch University Medallist Commendation Award. Despite having achieved much in both his studies and career, Benjamin remains grounded in doing his best for all the roles he plays.
A firm believer of giving back, including to the schools which he felt had provided him the foundation to build on his skills, Benjamin never shies away from calls to help at hosting school events despite his highly-packed schedule. He’s even the emcee for Murdoch University’s graduation ceremonies in Singapore! He shared how he made it through University with an enviable GPA, “I was motivated to make my parents proud so I studied hard, put in extra effort to do my readings and just kept going.”
Beyond hard work, Benjamin also credited his lecturers for imparting important ‘survival’ skillsets when he was pursuing his Double Majors in Communications & Media Studies and Public Relations. “From how to study smartly, to relevant applications of knowledge to real life situations, I find all these very useful even as the communication industry changes fast. More importantly, I’ve gained the ability to analyse and think creatively.”
Now a lecturer himself at Temasek Polytechnic teaching public speaking, we asked him for a quick lesson on better presentation. He said, “You don’t have to be a good speaker to be a good public presenter. Your ability to connect with the audience starts from knowing your materials. Prepare, practice and repeat. The more you put yourself out there, the better you’ll get.”
HR Assistant Vice President, Foreign Bank
Bachelor of Arts in Psychology
Murdoch University Student (2019)
After completing my first part-time Degree in International Business with Murdoch University in Kaplan, I have more time to serve the community.
It was then that I realised that if I want to help more people, I needed to equip myself with the right skills, such as counselling, and understanding how people think. I decided to take up another Degree - Psychology. It was also to fulfil my childhood dream of learning Psychology.
Since I am working in HR, the study of Psychology helps. Most of the time I am dealing with people. Understanding how people think and behave helps in better communication and helps me to complete my tasks more efficiently.
I have chosen Murdoch University because it is a reputable university and offers a wide range of Bachelor’s Degree programmes. The other factor is due to its location. It is easily accessible. I can get to class on time and go home early.
The lecturers are very understanding as they know the challenges of being a part-time student who works during the day. Lessons are conducted after working hours or weekends, thus, making it convenient for the working adults.
Working in a multinational company, it is very important to understand the different cultures and the right techniques in working with them, this course helps me in understanding all these.
Network Technician, Amazon Web Services
Bachelor in Cyber Forensics, Information Security & Management and Business
Information Systems (Double Major)
Murdoch University Graduate (2019)
In search of enhancing my credentials, I was attracted to Murdoch University due to its stellar reputation in grooming graduates with strong employability prospects. There were many Double Majors to choose from and I eventually decided to enrol for a Degree in Cyber Forensics, Information Security & Management and Business Information Systems. My Double Major Degree not only taught me to pinpoint an organisation’s weak security governance, it exposed me to varied ways of implementing proper data storage systems and also enhanced my analytical skills.
I was offered a new role in managing critical security governance issues and adeptly applied my theoretical knowledge to drive productivity and revenue for digital security in my organisation. Pursuing a Double Major Degree has expanded my perspectives, and I encourage others to take it on with Murdoch University as well.
Corporate Sales & Service Officer, Singapore Airlines (SIA)
Bachelor of Business in Human Resource Management and Management (Double Major)
Murdoch University Student (2018)
When it comes to success, some might feel that one’s grades determine their place on the corporate ladder. Others argue that attitude and grit are the better predictors of success.
Norhuda Zainal’s story certainly proves the latter.
Not to be outdone by her financial circumstances, Norhuda worked hard and eventually secured a job with Singapore Airlines (SIA) as a Corporate Sales and Service Officer. After 4 years with SIA, Norhuda came across an opportunity to assume greater responsibilities. Unfortunately, her aspiration was hampered by her lack of qualifications.
“I wanted to be more qualified so that I could climb the career ladder in my current company, gain more knowledge, and earn a better salary. This would help me secure my future.”
To achieve this, Norhuda knew that she needed a Degree from a distinguished University recognised by employers in Singapore. Wanting a shorter education span for quicker career progress, she chose Murdoch University at Kaplan.
“Murdoch University at Kaplan is a reputable and student-centric University which offers an extensive range of programmes with flexibility that suits my work schedule,” she explained.
Today, Norhuda takes pride in being a Murdoch University undergraduate, majoring in Human Resource Management and Management. She shared how the Degree has helped her gain confidence, and bolstered her knowledge and competitiveness in the workforce, enabling her to perform her job better.
“While my Degree in Human Resource Management is not directly relevant to my current role, it was nevertheless a worthwhile experience. I acquired a broad set of transferable skills such as how to better communicate with customers, manage difficult situations, and develop strategies to improve the overall quality of the organisation. These skills enabled me to better perform my duties as a Corporate Sales and Service officer.”
“Embarking on my Murdoch University Double Major Degree has also boosted my confidence. It has been a major challenge juggling my full-time job with part time studies, but I am glad I took it up. I have matured significantly through the course of my studies from managing my workload while ensuring that deadlines from both my work and studies were met. Upon graduating, I aim to take on a position of greater seniority and responsibility relevant to my course of study, so that I can put into practice what I have studied and get a salary increment.”

Convinced by stories shared by my colleagues who were studying part-time at Murdoch University, I decided to pursue my Double Major Degree there. In order to enjoy the best of both worlds, I enrolled in the Bachelor of Business in Accounting and Banking Degree programme to marry my personal and professional interests.
My Degree prompted my swift rise through the ranks. I was promoted to senior operation officer and took on new challenges that required quick thinking, such as managing commercial banking customers and supervising daily bank operations.
Systems Engineer, Power Industry
Bachelor in Cyber Forensics, Information Security & Management and Business
Information Systems (Double Major)
Murdoch University Graduate (2018)
Since young, I have always wanted to pursue a career in cyber security. Upon attaining a Higher Nitec certificate in Network Security Technology and a Diploma in Information Technology from Republic Polytechnic, I was motivated to advance my tertiary education with Murdoch University.
Reminiscing my Kaplan journey reminds me of my deep appreciation for the refreshing curriculum delivered by experienced lecturers. Not only were they able to highlight the essence of each topic through the sharing of real-life experiences, they patiently guided us in terms of prioritising our workload. The knowledge I have gained from this Degree programme has strengthened my adaptability in countering real-world issues such as spotting key indicators in system faults, performing active hunting and providing prompt incident responses.

To remain competitive in today’s workforce, having a Degree has become increasingly important in the job market.
A Degree offers more job openings and more flexibility with which jobs I can apply for are the key reasons for pursuing a Degree. As I have my diploma from Nanyang Polytechnic, I was granted module exemptions and can complete my degree in 16 months instead of 28 months.
The great variety of Double Major Degree programmes offered by Murdoch University sparked my interest. It has over 250 Double Majors and 21 disciplines for me to choose from.
Performance & Career Development Officer,
Singapore Civil Defence Force
Bachelor of Arts in Tourism & Events and Management (Double Major)
Murdoch University Graduate (2018)
With the bar continually rising, I chose to remain competitive by enhancing my knowledge base with this Double Major to meet new challenges. Upon graduating with a Diploma in Environmental Sciences from Republic Polytechnic, I chose to pursue my Double Major Degree at Murdoch University. It was a perfect combination that helped me hone my management skills as well as deepen my understanding of the tourism and events sector.
The deep-dive into these two areas has benefited me in breadth and depth across multiple disciplines, and has built my confidence to exercise sound judgement in real-life situations. My studies at Murdoch have given me a fresh pair of lenses to view tourism beyond sight-seeing. Through the lessons, I began to understand how overcrowding can hinder locals from carrying out their daily routines, leading to tensions between tourists and locals.
I am glad to say that the programme has propelled me in my career. In my current role as a Human Resources Officer overseeing performance grading, promotions and career development, the Degree’s emphasis on lateral thinking has inspired me to implement in-demand training courses for staff to upgrade their knowledge and skills. Additionally, my Degree has set me up for career progression from Career Development Officer to Performance & Career Development Officer, opening up more opportunities overseas.
Fuelled by my belief that education is pivotal in making us adaptable to the changing times, I strongly recommend Murdoch University for its commitment to high standards of teaching and student support, assured by a Dean in Singapore who oversees all educational aspects. Most of all, I credit my lecturers who always go the extra mile to provide professional advice, for where I am today.

Army Engineer (Ammunition), Singapore Armed Forces
Bachelor of Commerce in International Business
Murdoch University Graduate (2018)
How far can a former ITE student go? Quite a distance, as Joy Edith Lucas shows.
The 29-year-old, who left ITE with a Higher Nitec in Business Administration, is looking forward to an exciting and promising career after graduating from Murdoch University with a Bachelor of Commerce in International Business.
“I wanted a recognised degree that would give me an edge over others, and Murdoch has enabled me to do so,” said Joy, an Army Engineer (Ammunition) with the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF).
Joy plays a critical role in ensuring the operational readiness of the armed forces. She maintains the ammunition stockpile, and performs inspections, transportation, and surveillance of all ammunition in the army, air force and navy.
The knowledge and skills gained from her degree has helped her immensely in her work, even winning her an important two-month stint overseas, as well as job offers from two large banks.
She elaborated: “Having a second role in the army recruitment team, I was able to apply the management and marketing knowledge I learned in my job.
“I have many national servicemen from different nationalities working under me. Thanks to the module International Management, I could better manage their expectations by learning how to give them the right incentives. Additionally, the module Organisational Theory and Behaviour provided me exceptional insights on how to manage my subordinates and to better understand them from a professional standpoint.”
In late 2017, Joy was sent on an overseas military exercise to New Zealand for two months. On top of being the ammunition technician, she was tasked to foster cordial relations with the New Zealand Defence force. Joy believes that her deployment was in part due to the knowledge and exposure gained through her International Business degree.
For her outstanding work and dedication, Joy received the Good Service medal from SAF as well as the Commander’s coin for her contribution to the overseas mission.
Looking back at her lessons at Murdoch, she recalled: “The degree programme is very varied and fast-paced, and the interactive teaching system made learning interesting and engaging. I never felt like dozing off during classes because the lecturers made it really fun!
“Knowing how recognised and acclaimed Murdoch University is made me so much more confident in the degree that I was taking. And indeed, my International Business degree has given me an edge over a lot of my peers as I have more career options. I was offered jobs in various positions in multinational companies, including positions at two major banks here. I am excited to see how high my degree will bring me to.”

Can you pivot successfully from a military career, to a civilian one without a Degree?
A question that infantry officer Mohammed Hafiz Bin Akhirrudin sought to answer.
After completing an enriching National Service tour, Hafiz decided to extend his service by signing on as an infantry officer in 2008. He enjoyed the athletic nature of the job, and relished the opportunity to lead and mentor future leaders of the Army.
While he was determined to thrive in the military, he found it difficult to stand out in an organisation with tens of thousands of employees without the right qualifications. That was until he embarked on his Murdoch University Degree, granting him recognition by his commanders and resulting in his nomination as the main organiser of the prestigious 2017 Infantry Feast.
“I had the honour of organising one of the biggest yearly events in the SAF - The Infantry Feast. This was an event where Infanteers from the entire SAF gathered together to feast and forge greater camaraderie. The knowledge and skills that I gained from the Degree enabled me to better manage and motivate the event committee, present innovative ideas and perspectives to the planning, and ensure a seamless transition between the various segments of the event.”
Hafiz graduated from Murdoch University in 2016 with a Bachelor of Arts in Tourism and Event Management. His Degree equipped him with vital knowledge and skills that enhanced the manner he strategised and conducted military trainings and events, which caught the attention of his superiors.
Thanks to his outstanding performance, Hafiz was promoted from Captain Grade 1 to Captain Grade 2 in 2017. He was subsequently assigned heavier responsibilities such as being the Officer-in-Charge of the distinguished Army Deployment Force, and made to oversee the unit’s NSmen training.
Aside from boosting Hafiz’s military progression, the Murdoch University Degree also revealed new career opportunities to him. The business modules he took during the course of his studies sparked an interest to start his own business. Consequently in 2018, Hafiz decided to leave his high-flying SAF career to pursue and apply the knowledge he learned in a business venture.
Today, the former military regular is a successful entrepreneur and founder of KomengTech – a company that develops mobile apps, designs websites, and organises technology-related events both locally and overseas. He shared that the expertise garnered from his Degree was one of his key career-transition enablers.
“The Degree provided me with a solid foundational framework of how events should be managed from the planning to post-execution phase. I even had the opportunity to collaborate and network with travel and event companies. This gave me plenty of insight and subsequently I ventured into my own business.”

Bachelor of Arts in Psychology
Murdoch University Student (2017)
I graduated from Serangoon Junior College and I was not qualified for a course in the local universities. However, I have always wanted to pursue Psychology since my secondary school days.
I wanted to have a better understanding of myself and the people around me. I felt that studying Psychology can provide me greater insights into mental wellness. Thus, I took up Diploma in Counselling with Kaplan.
After obtaining my Diploma, I am now pursuing my Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology with Murdoch University at Kaplan.
Kaplan offers many choices. I decided to choose Murdoch University due to its global recognition and strong presence in Singapore.
As I am working full-time while pursuing my degree, Murdoch University’s flexible study schedule makes it easy for me to balance between work and studies. It also provides me with reasonable timelines to submit my assignments and prepare for exams. The location is a plus point as it is easily accessible by public transport.
The lecturers are also approachable and helpful as they would schedule sessions outside lessons to help us with our assignments. They have made learning an enjoyable experience for students.
I would definitely recommend this Bachelor’s Degree programme to those who want to further study in Psychology.
Human Resources Assistant, National University of Singapore (NUS)
Bachelor of Business in Human Resource Management and Management (Double Major)
Murdoch University Student (2018)
“It’s a competitive world out there, so I need to acquire skills, knowledge and a Double Major Degree to enhance my career prospects,” declared Diploma holder Nurul Atyqa Binte Zainal.
The 26-year-old Human Resources Assistant came to this conclusion when she learned that she would need a Bachelor's Degree to advance her career. Thus, she fired up a fierce resolve to carve a better future for herself, and started her part-time Bachelor of Business in Human Resource Management and Management (Double Major) in May 2017.
Her reasons for choosing higher education at Murdoch University were varied; for one, Murdoch University offers flexibility for students juggling full-time jobs as they can choose the number of modules to take per semester. Also, its Degrees are recognised by companies in Singapore and the University further offers technology-integrated learning, which allows students to attend lessons and conduct discussions either online or in person.
Explaining her choice in Double Majors, Atyqa states that “Management is a tangible skill that is hard to acquire without proper knowledge or guidance and would be very useful in preparing for an upgrade in my job responsibilities.”
The newfound knowledge from her lessons have already helped in her work at a local University and in her personal life.
One of her modules, Knowledge Management, showed her the different models that organisations should adopt, including the SECI model, which stands for Socialisation, Externalisation, Combination and Internalisation.
“After learning about SECI, I applied the ‘socialisation’ element to interact with our external and internal customers, requesting feedback on how we could improve the employee onboarding processes and sharing the comments with my manager and our team for discussion. The module has equipped me with knowledge on how to work better both as individuals and members of a team,” shared Atyqa.
Another module, Wellbeing, taught her the “PERMA” model - a theory on happiness in life. The acronym stands for Positive Emotion, Engagement, Relationships, Meaning, and Accomplishments, and the theory states that these components are intrinsically linked.
Atyqa praises how the model helped her identify life’s essential elements, motivating her to persevere in her studies and helping her understand the new staff joining the organisation and assisting them in settling in.
Recounting the days when she felt overwhelmed by work and school, and the dejection at missing out on spending time with friends to complete her assignments, Atyqa mentions that she had doubts about studying.
“However, the ‘Positive Emotion’ and ’Accomplishments’ elements reminded me that if I didn’t complete this Degree, I wouldn’t be able to accomplish one of the most significant milestones in life, and upgrade myself in my job. I certainly don’t want to be stagnant.”
“The knowledge I gained from my classes has injected in me a newfound interest in my job. I am inspired to forge ahead and overcome my hurdles, because I know I will be rewarded with a better career once I graduate.”
Engineer, Security Solutions Provider
Bachelor in Cyber Forensics, Information Security Management and Business Information Systems (Double Major)
Murdoch University Graduate (2019)
Mention “cyber forensics” and you will probably think of hit Hollywood dramas like CSI: Cyber or any of the hacker-inspired movies in this list. For 27-year-old Zhang Jia Cai though, the phrase means a whole new exciting career.
A few years ago, the Computer Engineering Diploma holder was a desktop engineer handling technical computer issues faced by his colleagues. Then, like how great things began, he asked the big question: Why?
“As a desktop engineer, you only have access to surface-level information when a security incident happens in your organisation. But I wanted to find out why, what, when and how it happened, and analyse in-depth data to solve it,” shared Jia Cai.
To do that, he needed to have advanced knowledge of cyber forensics. This led him to enrol in a Degree programme at Murdoch University.
Murdoch University at Kaplan was Jia Cai’s top choice, as he was drawn to its sterling reputation and widely recognised Degrees. Murdoch’s part-time programme structure allowed him to hold down a full-time job while pursuing his dream programme. Kaplan’s central location also made it easily accessible from his office.
Today, Jia Cai is a proud Murdoch University graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Cyber Forensics and Information Security and Business Information Systems (Double Major).
After graduation, he received a job offer as an Engineer in the Security Operations Centre at PCS Security Pte. Ltd. He ensures his organisation's information assets are secure, through monitoring for anomalies in the network, investigating them and performing remediation/escalation as required.
This was his dream come true. “My new career has just begun, and I’m certain that it’ll be an exciting one,” Jia Cai remarked.
He added: “I've always been interested in various aspects of IT. However, I love to work in the cyber security field as I’m curious to know why and how security breaches and incidents occur. Graduating with Double Majors allows me to expand my field of knowledge, and be more versatile in my future career progression.
“My Murdoch Degree has equipped me with the knowledge to review different cybersecurity events and network traffic flows. I’ve also learned how to analyse available information to find out why specific security incidents occur.
“I recommend Murdoch University to anyone who wants to be a cyber forensics investigator, or be involved in the information security of an organisation. With the University’s Double Major system, they can also attain knowledge and skills in other areas like business information systems or programming. The University’s Degree improves their versatility and creates more career opportunities.”

Believing that there was an increasing demand for labour in the IT sector, I chose to broaden my knowledge in two specialisations, Computer Science and Cyber Forensics. Gaining a recognised Double Major Degree from Murdoch, accredited by the Australian Computer Society (ACS), further affirms that choosing Murdoch University has been the best decision I have made.

Is academic knowledge necessary in hospitality jobs? Wouldn’t on-the-job skills and working experience alone be enough?
Read about the real-life experience of Claire Soh Xi Wen to find out.
Upon completing her Diploma in Hotel & Hospitality Management from a local polytechnic, Claire understood perfectly well that she needed to further her studies.
“While many undergraduates are focused on using a Degree to fast-forward their career, my sole intention then was to gain more knowledge first,” the 26-year-old said.
Initially, Claire had a colleague studying at Murdoch University who gave positive reviews about the school. She then found out more about the advantages of a Murdoch Degree, particularly that they were recognised by Singapore companies and that the Degree programme encompassed a good mix of individual course work and team projects.
Continuing with her passion in business and hospitality management, Claire enrolled in a Bachelor of Commerce in Hospitality and Tourism Management and Management (Double Major Degree) at Murdoch University.
Soon after graduation, Claire found a fulfilling industry-relevant job at a local university as an Executive in the Office of International Affairs, where she assists in facilitating visits from international visitors. Such trips are important as they help the university to expand its international reach and foster strategic alliances.
Claire’s university education has enriched her with a global mindset— invaluable in today’s international economy. In addition, she elaborates on how each module contributed to her success, such as the Hospitality module, which reinforced her globalist ethos to improve her ability to work internationally and within a multicultural environment, and taught her relevant skills such as public relations.
Another module she states as being especially useful was Sustainable Tourism, citing her workplace as focusing on sustainability and the importance of her being aware of its factors.
Claire added that the knowledge and technical skills she acquired in her Management modules allowed her to better understand the rationale behind her superior’s decisions. Besides effectively carrying out instructions, she now actively contributes ideas and effective options.
“I was recently tasked to work on an improvement programme. The knowledge I gained on business research and planning allowed me to consider both management and employee perspectives, and possible solutions and developments. Being gradually exposed to different work demands and situations, I realise that the knowledge I gained in my Degree have helped me along,” she shared.

Bachelor of Business in Human Resource Management and Business Law (Double Major)
Murdoch University Student (2019)
When Anees Fathima D/O Mohamed Asana Labai struggled through a difficult period in 2014, she realised the way out was through education. She enrolled for a Diploma in Business and Law, and didn’t stop there.
At present, the 41-year-old is a proud undergraduate in Murdoch University’s Bachelor of Business in Human Resource Management and Business Law, and will graduate in 2019.
“I used education to redirect my life and attention, because education is something that no one can take away from me,” said Anees, who’s the personal assistant to the CEO of an offshore oil and gas company. The multi-tasker often assists her company on HR matters, helping to perform an important company function. Her boss believes in her so much, he even entrusts her to read the legal documents related to his property when required.
She added: “I have 12 years of experience in human resource, prior to my current job. Law has always enticed me since young. But after the loss of my late father during my high school years, I had to give up my dreams and begin working for my family. I took a Double Major in Human Resource Management and Business Law because it is an amalgamation of my job experience, my passion, and what I do in my current job. The two majors are a perfect match, as a HR manager should know some aspects of Business Law, like Workplace Law.”
She is certain that, with the erudition and skills gained from a Bachelor’s degree, she can perform better in her job, create more job opportunities for herself, and also help others who are lost as she once was. All of these will empower her to become a strong pillar for her children.
“I already learnt Family Law and Property Law in my diploma. I want to be educated on the other aspects of law. When I complete my degree, I would have gained knowledge of Workplace Law, Marketing and Advertising Law, as well as Taxation Law. These are so useful in a professional and personal capacity. I want to tap into my knowledge of law to help friends and neighbours who are going through tough times and need legal guidance. Not everything is about dollars and cents. Being able to help others increases my self-respect, and gives me the motivation to move forward, ” Anees added.
She explained she chose Murdoch University because of the high reputation and recognition the university enjoys. The school environment is conducive while its central location is convenient.
While she admitted it has been tough juggling full-time work with part-time studies, she is determined to see it through.
She explained: “The new knowledge enhances my understanding of the world around us, and it motivates me to continue to learn and develop. It is crucial that all the legal matters are managed carefully, and the module Workplace Law has helped me tremendously; I use it to guide me when I assist my company on HR matters. “The modules Principles of HR and Advanced HR & Business Research Methods were especially insightful because my lecturer was very detailed, and the topics covered were very comprehensive. I can now handle my tasks at work better, more efficiently and confidently. And I am certain, my Bachelor's degree will lead me to further career advancement.”
Investigation Analyst, Local Bank
Bachelor of Business in Banking and Finance (Double Major)
Murdoch University Graduate (2018)
Top 2% Vice Chancellor’s Commendation for Academic Excellence Awards 2018 Recipient
Are paper qualifications necessary to succeed in the world of banking and finance? Janet Yeo, who left Ngee Ann Polytechnic with a Diploma in Business Studies (Travel & Tourism), did not think so until she chanced upon some job recruitment advertisements.
“I looked at them and the minimum qualification required was a Degree, which I did not have. This meant that if I were to hunt for a new job, I might get rejected without being granted an interview. To stay relevant and employable for the next 20 years, I needed to at least be a Degree-holder,” explained the 42-year-old analyst at a global bank.
This startling “eureka” moment triggered the mother-of-three to upgrade herself and finally fulfil her lifelong dream of getting a university Degree. It also transformed her into a wonder woman and inspiration to her family and colleagues.
Recognising the utmost importance of studying for a Degree that is accredited and recognised by employers in Singapore, Janet enrolled in her top-choice institution, Murdoch University. Appreciating its easy-to-use and convenient e-platform for information retrieval, she found that she could easily enrol in her desired modules online. Moreover, the school campus in the city was easily accessible by public transport.
Janet had worked five years as an Assistant Investigation Officer in government service, and then later, as an Analyst on anti-money laundering in a local bank, before joining her current company. As her experience is specialised, she foresees herself continuing to work in the banking industry. Janet thus chose to enrol in the Bachelor of Business in Banking and Finance (Double Major).
Reflecting on her experience, Janet mused: “The lessons at Murdoch, specifically modules in Treasury Management and Derivative Securities, were very helpful in giving me a stronger understanding of our financial system, various types of securities, and investment-related transactions. I also gained an insight to the different investment products. This helps me to perform my work in reviewing banking transactions more efficiently.”
Admitting that she was only an average student in her younger days, Janet received a pleasant surprise when she achieved such good grades at Murdoch that she received the Valedictorian award in October 2018.
The awards are presented to the top two per cent of students enrolled in the Bachelor’s Degree who have achieved a minimum of 15 credit points of High Distinction within the academic year. Janet is one of only eight transnational students receiving the award.
The experience she has gained from public speaking in class presentations and in front of her cohort at her graduation has also boosted her confidence, and it shows when she handles presentations at work.
“I’m especially proud of myself for achieving my Degree while working full-time. Instead of simply telling my three children how important education is and that they can achieve what they want through determination, I have demonstrated it in person. In my workplace, I became an inspiration to people who previously thought it was impossible to juggle work, family and study, and still achieve good results,” Janet said in reflection.
“I no longer feel inferior to my colleagues and friends in terms of my education. Should I decide to look for another job in the future, I am confident my Murdoch Degree will place me on par, if not above, other job competitors now that I have both the paper qualifications and the experience.”

Three years away from the workforce and a polytechnic diploma limited Eustacia Tang Kwan Yu’s career opportunities when she returned to work in mid-2015.
“I had very little job opportunities then. Even with more than six years of prior working experience, most employers didn't want to employ someone who had left the workforce for a few years. I also had a hard time getting jobs because most required a minimum qualification of a Bachelor’s Degree,” said the 31-year-old former housewife, who had an IT Diploma in Mobile and Wireless Computing.
While she eventually found a job in project management that required her to do some programming, Eustacia felt overwhelmed by the latter due to a lack of practice.
Faced with limited career advancement and rusty programming skills, Eustacia realised then that she had to improve herself with a degree to brighten her future career prospects.
She chose Murdoch University as it is a recognised tertiary institution. Besides, the centrally located Kaplan campus where the course was held at was located just a few train stations from her workplace. With lessons scheduled at night, she could attend classes conveniently after work.
To gain the strong IT skills that she needed for her job, Eustacia picked the Bachelor of Science in Business Information Systems and Computer Science (Double Major).
Eustacia shared that she reaped profesional benefits from her various industry-relevant modules even before she graduated in March 2018.
For a start, the Business Intelligence module taught her how to manage data visuals, allowing her to present useful information in simple and digestible formats to the audience. Another module reintroduced her to Java programming, helping her to pick up and polish the essential skill required in her job.
Because of the knowledge and skills she gained from the Double Major Degree, Eustacia was offered a job at a reputable bank here as a Client On-boarding Officer. Beyond performing periodic reviews on clients’ accounts, her new role required her to programme useful applications that would help her team work more efficiently.
Eustacia’s Murdoch Degree has given her a new shot at building her career. It also helped her to discover a valuable side of herself. She did so well that she was chosen to deliver the Valedictory Address at the Murdoch University’s Graduation in March 2018 - an honour usually reserved for exceptional students.
“I wasn’t a good student in my polytechnic days. But I realised, while studying for my Murdoch Degree, that I have a driving force to explore and learn new things. The dedicated lecturers helped me to progress well throughout the programme, giving students like me further explanations and extending their help even after their usual classes. I highly recommend the Double Major Bachelor’s Degree I took. The entire programme is useful to anyone interested to be a programmer as it equips them with IT skills,” she said.

“My journey with Kaplan stemmed from my desire to explore the world of business. Upon attaining a Diploma in Business Administration, I then assumed an Executive position where I readily applied my skills and knowledge, and took on a range of responsibilities including administration, payroll and even marketing. Motivated to advance my skillsets and grow my expertise further, I chose to pursue a Double Major Degree in Human Resource Management and Management at Murdoch University, one of the World’s Top 100 Universities in the Asia-Pacific region.*
The combination of two different Majors provided me with great insight into complementing subject matters concerning the management of an organisation’s human capital. The good synergy between two different specialisations not only boosted my confidence in conversing with others on a broader range of topics, but has empowered me to make better decisions at work.
I was blessed to have lecturers who made my study experience a purposeful and enriching one. Lessons were engaging as the lecturers were well-versed in their areas of expertise, and had a knack for explaining complex concepts and facilitating peer-to-peer learning in dialogue sessions. They also went the extra mile to provide additional consultancy outside of curriculum hours.
In my current role, I can implement ethical business practices with vendors to solve issues such as over-claiming and missing information, due to industry-relevant units like International Management. Thanks to my newfound knowledge of workplace laws and sharpened communication skills, I am able to establish a good rapport with both internal and external stakeholders.
My Double Major programme has paid high dividends in providing me the best of both worlds. I am proud to say that it has prepared me well to assume future senior management roles. I recommend Murdoch University for its wide range of programmes that will support individuals like myself in excelling in their preferred careers.”

The Degree has helped me realise what I want out of my current career and how I can achieve it. It has also taught me the skills required to learn to lead and manage a team, as well as to think from the organisation’s perspective.
Our assignments are well-paced and do not affect our work. The lecturers have always been very helpful and approachable as they are always open to us contacting them if we have any enquiries. The knowledgeable lecturers also ensure that we understand what we are being taught during lectures and help us keep track of our assignment checkpoints.
I would recommend Murdoch to others because I feel that it is a reputable University with a very organised and easy to follow course structure. The timetable is flexible, which is good for part-time students such as myself who are juggling school with full-time work.

Murdoch University Student (2021)
I chose Murdoch University for its reputation and recognition, and because it offers a broad spectrum of attractive and relatively affordable Degree options.
Personally, equipping myself with a Double Major Degree could attract more job opportunities and greater earnings, achievable with the well-rounded knowledge I will gain in this journey with Murdoch.
Pursuing this Degree has also helped me in my previous employment with National Environment Agency (NEA) as an Enforcement Officer, as my Criminology major opened up more paths for me in enforcement and investigation.
As I work full-time while studying part-time, I appreciate that Murdoch University offers flexible timings for their lessons, allowing me a good balance between work, study and other life’s commitments. Lessons in the evening give me ample time to get off work and then tune in to the online classes.
I would recommend Murdoch to others, as it has been a smooth sailing journey for me, and I believe it will continue to be. In addition, Murdoch offers majors that appear distinct from one other, which would help students with separate fields of interests.
Cybersecurity Analyst, Deloitte
Bachelor of Information Technology in Mobile and Web Application Development and Cyber Security and Forensics (Double Major)
Murdoch University Graduate (2022)
I chose to enrol in the Diploma in Information Technology (IT) with Kaplan as I have always been interested in how technology works. Upon graduating from this programme, I knew I had to further my studies to expand my knowledge and decided to enrol at Murdoch University. My Kaplan Diploma granted me exemptions and I could proceed straight to Year 2 of the Degree programme.
Pursuing this Degree has equipped me with niche skills that are necessary to stand out professionally. Some of the lessons applicable to my career include practical cyber security and IT knowledge. Furthermore, I was also taught critical analysis and problem-solving skills and learned how to tackle problems in the real world independently.
I had plenty to learn at the University, and my Degree enabled me to secure my job. In fact, I have recommended Murdoch University to my best friend who will be enrolling in 2023.
