After five years as an account executive in the finance division of a digital printing agency, Ms Crystal Poh made an internal transfer within her company to become a customer service executive in the sales department.
The 28-year-old had wanted to move away from a backend role to a frontline one that enables her to meet and interact with clients.
“I was keen to develop new skill sets and knowledge to build up my personal portfolio, as well as to strengthen my career advancement opportunities,” she adds.
However, on-the-job training alone was not enough to give the diploma holder the career boost she desired.
Now that her company is on an expansion track with businesses in Malaysia and other parts of the Asia-Pacific region, Ms Poh feels that she needs to develop a global mind-set and gain management skills to effectively lead people in the future, in order to excel in her role.
With that in mind, she enrolled in the Double Major Degree in International Business and Management programme offered by Murdoch University at Kaplan Singapore in September 2017.
The programme offers a flexible study schedule that enables her to study on a part-time basis. This arrangement is perfect for her as she can attend classes after knocking off from work in the evening, and commuting from her workplace to the campus is convenient with the latter being centrally located near Dhoby Ghaut MRT station.
Murdoch University at Kaplan also offers Double Major Degrees in International Business with other specialisations such as Cyber Security and Forensics, Finance, Hospitality and Tourism Management, or Marketing.
Closer to her goals
When Ms Poh graduates in January next year, she hopes to use her newfound knowledge to move up to a regional role and accelerate her career in sales.
The programme modules cover different aspects such as International Marketing, International Management, Corporate Governance, Operations, Economics and Business Negotiation, and they help to hone her skills in various areas.
She says: “For example, the Management major equipped me with effective leadership and management skills. Others such as Strategic Management, Business Analytics and Decision Making, as well as Organisational Development Change are practical and industry-relevant.”
She feels that Murdoch University’s technology-integrated learning approach helps her to ease into her studies better. For example, content-rich online videos offer her a basic understanding of the topics even before the lesson begins.
Her initiative to improve herself and her efforts have not gone unnoticed. Her company recognised her growth and recently promoted her to an accounts servicing executive, increasing her remuneration package and the accompanying extra incentives.
Ms Poh is glad to have taken the step to upgrade her skills at Murdoch University through Kaplan. Applicants can be rest assured of the high standard of academic delivery, as the Pro Vice-Chancellor Transnational Education and Dean from Murdoch University is based in Singapore to oversee the academic aspects of the programmes.
She also attests to the institution’s good reputation, high standard of academic delivery, knowledgeable and friendly lecturers, and great learning environment, and would recommend the programme to others who desire to boost their career with a higher education.
