Why Psychological Science Matters
Singapore’s National Mental Health and Well-Being Strategy notes that mental health disorders were already among the top four causes of disease burden6.
At the same time, the supply of trained mental-health professionals in Singapore remains limited. To address this gap, the Ministry of Health (MOH) is implementing a comprehensive plan to expand the national mental-health workforce and strengthen care capabilities by 20307.
MOH will grow and upskill the mental-health workforce, including professionals, frontline staff, and volunteers, to better support individuals with diverse mental-health needs. The ministry will also expand hospital and long-term care capacity as a crucial safety net for people with severe or chronic mental-health conditions.
To meet rising demand, MOH has set clear workforce targets:
- Increase the number of public-sector psychiatrists by about 30% to approximately 260 by 20307.
- Increase the number of public-sector psychologists by about 40% to approximately 300 by 20307.
These initiatives underscore Singapore’s commitment to strengthening mental-health support and highlight the growing demand for graduates trained in Psychology.
