After completing my Diploma in Hospitality & Tourism Management in Kaplan, I immediately continued to pursue a Degree in Hospitality & Tourism Management and Management with Murdoch University.

In my opinion, having a Bachelor’s Degree is very critical to stay relevant in Singapore. A Degree is an investment that will bring job security and it is a down payment on my future. I believe that by obtaining a Degree, I would be highly marketable and this will pave the way for multiple opportunities for myself.

To decide on which university was an easy decision! Murdoch University is recognised worldwide and it has a vast offering of over 180 Double Majors and 18 disciplines to choose from.

I decided to pursue a Double Major Degree programme because I can learn two specialisations and gain the competitive edge over my peers.

I chose Management as the other major because the modules are industry-relevant. They add value to my current job. I have a stronger understanding due to hands-on application of the theories learned in class. I am more confident to see a task through from beginning to end despite challenges and obstacles along the way. To me, it is an important skill in a real-world professional setting where things do not always go as planned.

I would encourage Diploma graduates to pursue their Degrees. It is a commitment but the benefits you reap after earning your Degree will make the investment well worth it. Murdoch University is the right choice for you!

Upon completing her Diploma in Hotel & Hospitality Management from a local polytechnic, Claire understood perfectly well that she needed to further her studies.

“While many undergraduates are focused on using a Degree to fast-forward their career, my sole intention then was to gain more knowledge first,” the 26-year-old said.

Initially, Claire had a colleague studying at Murdoch University who gave positive reviews about the school. She then found out more about the advantages of a Murdoch Degree, particularly that they were recognised by Singapore companies and that the Degree programme encompassed a good mix of individual course work and team projects.

Continuing with her passion in business and hospitality management, Claire enrolled in a Bachelor of Commerce in Hospitality and Tourism Management and Management (Double Major Degree) at Murdoch University.

Soon after graduation, Claire found a fulfilling industry-relevant job at a local university as an Executive in the Office of International Affairs, where she assists in facilitating visits from international visitors. Such trips are important as they help the university to expand its international reach and foster strategic alliances.

Claire’s university education has enriched her with a global mindset— invaluable in today’s international economy. In addition, she elaborates on how each module contributed to her success, such as the Hospitality module, which reinforced her globalist ethos to improve her ability to work internationally and within a multicultural environment, and taught her relevant skills such as public relations.

Another module she states as being especially useful was Sustainable Tourism, citing her workplace as focusing on sustainability and the importance of her being aware of its factors.

Claire added that the knowledge and technical skills she acquired in her Management modules allowed her to better understand the rationale behind her superior’s decisions. Besides effectively carrying out instructions, she now actively contributes ideas and effective options.

“I was recently tasked to work on an improvement programme. The knowledge I gained on business research and planning allowed me to consider both management and employee perspectives, and possible solutions and developments. Being gradually exposed to different work demands and situations, I realise that the knowledge I gained in my Degree have helped me along,” she shared.
